Symbols are used on maps to show the location of features such as towns, roads, rivers and vegetation. Many sybols look like the features they represent. The colours used for the symbols may also provide a clue to their meaning, and the importance of a feature might be shown by the size of the symbol, the thickness of the line or the size of the printing used. The meaning of the each symbol is explained in the map's key, or legend.
